The Sustainability Intern will design and implement a compost system that captures food waste from rental events at the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML). Compost will be used for a new fruit orchard, expanding existing heritage garden, and landscaping. This compost will help increase the yield in the orchard and heritage garden, which will provide produce for Feed Iowa First addressing the rising concern of food insecurity in our community amidst a global pandemic.

The intern will create and implement a series of educational programs geared towards adults and families that teach about:

  • Immigrant Farming Traditions
  • Composting
  • Sustainable Agriculture

Responsibilities

  • Design a system of composting for the entire NCSML building and operations
  • Create higher yields with our orchard and heritage garden by utilizing the compost
  • Reduce waste at the NCSML from rental events
  • Design and implement educational programs that lead to the increased awareness around composting, immigration, and sustainability
  • Host one partner program

Skills and Qualifications

  • Basic level of knowledge about gardening/agriculture and experience successfully managing a garden
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; comfortable with taking initiative; ability to handle multiple tasks at once
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Superior customer service skills; comfortable working with children and the general public
  • Outgoing and comfortable speaking in front of groups of people
  • Must be available to work Saturdays

Title: Summer 2021 Sustainability Intern

Status: Part-time, paid internship

Hours and Compensation

  • 20 hours per week for a total of 180 hours
  • Starting in June and ending in August with some flexibility
  • Wage of $9.00 per hour

About the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library

For more than 40 years, the NCSML has collected preserved and interpreted the stories of Czechs and Slovaks. In the beginning, our audience was relatively small, mostly local and composed primarily of visitors with Czech or Slovak heritage. Now a national museum with international standing, our audience has become much more diverse.
