The Des Moines Metro Opera Presents: The Mythical Slavic Mermaid

[su_row][su_column size=”2/3″][/su_column][su_column size=”1/3″]Join us for a fascinating exploration of the music in the opera Rusalka. Des Moines Metro Opera’s production highlights the 125th anniversary of Antonin Dvořák’s sojourn in Spillville, Iowa, where legend has it he was inspired to compose the opera upon observing a young woman swimming in the Turkey River. In Slavic mythology, a “rusalka” is akin to a Celtic mermaid or Greek siren, who dwelled near bodies of water and lured young men to their untimely deaths. Des Moines Metro Opera’s Principal Conductor David Neely will lead a presentation, including performances by principal artists. Refreshments to follow the presentations and performances. This event is free.
