Czech That Film

Czech That Film is a nationally touring film festival which showcases the best in recent Czech cinema. 2015 marks the fourth year for the festival, which is organized by the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles. The festival includes screenings in 18 cities across the United States. The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library is proud to bring Czech That Film back to Cedar Rapids for a second year in partnership with Collins Road Theatres.

Opening Evening Package: $15 per person
Includes film screening of To See the Sea at Collins Road Theatres, Q&A with director Jiří Mádl, and a reception with hors d’oeuvres and a meet-and-greet at Campbell Steele Gallery in Marion. Cash bar available.

Individual Film Screenings: $5 per person
Includes one ticket to your festival film of choice at Collins Road Theatres. All films are in Czech with English subtitles.

A reception with the director will take place at 8:45pm at Campbell Steele Gallery in Marion. (Options: attend the screening only for $5, or attend both the screening and the reception for $15)
Eleven-year-old Tomas receives a camera for his birthday. Wanting to become the next acclaimed director like Miloš Forman, he decides to secretly record his father, who he suspects is having an affair. With the camera as his tool, he becomes a detective intent on finding truth. In the process, he finds out more about himself and the world around him than he ever imagined. His best friend Haris also borrows the camera, putting a lens to the stark reality of his violent father.

Nominated for 5 Czech Film Critics’ Awards (2015), including Best Film, Best Direction, and Best Screenplay. Won the Children’s Jury Main Prize at the Zlín IFF 2014. Received Special Mention at Finále Plzeň and the Gorky Studio Special Prize at VOICES – Russia (2014). Won Best Film at the Motovun FF in Croatia (2014).

Seen through the eyes of Petr, Jiří, and Ondřej, Listopad bring to life the exhilarating days of November 1989 when, in spite of everything and everyone going against them, students and artists and dissidents filled the streets of Prague to stand up for their hopes and dreams of freedom.

Oskar, Max and Viktor (once a superstar clown trio) split up over a heartbreaking fight. Now they’re paying the price of thirty years of separate grueling lives on and off the stage. Their irresistible sense of humor is challenged by the proximity of the physical end and other joys of old age.

They‘re about to risk everything to find out whether there really is one more show left in them – a re-staging of the famous clownery that launched the group‘s career – while also facing the hardest challenge yet: clowning their way out.

This explosive comedy, based on a successful theatrical play, takes place once evening in a remote village pub during an Ice Hockey World Championship match. Many things can happen when a kidnapped bride gets drunk with the best friend of the groom and a barmaid – and the only one who is able to save everything can’t make it to the party. A laugh-out-loud film, Icing proves that what is meant to be your perfect day can sometimes turn into a not-so-perfect tragedy.

This dark comedy begins with Michal and Adam, two childhood friends, coming back to their hometown after 20 years. Michal’s mother has been dead for several years and Michal’s father dies on the day they return. His stepmother behaves suspiciously, which encourages Michal and Adam to investigate. They embark on a journey to solve a mystery, unaware that disaster awaits.

In 1980s Czechoslovakia, young and talented sprinter Anna is selected for the national team and starts training to qualify for the Olympic Games. As part of the preparation, she is placed in a secret “medical program,” where she is given anabolic steroids to better her performance. Her mother sees the drugs as Anna’s ticket out from behind the Iron Curtain, while Anna knows the doping is harming her body. In a story that follows the impacts of a decision, a young woman is tested by fate.
