The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library was founded in 1974 as the Czech Fine Arts Foundation. A museum was opened in 1978 as the Czech Museum and Library in a 3-room house at 1607 C Street SW, Cedar Rapids. The museum moved to a renovated commercial building on the current museum site in 1981. The immigrant home was acquired and moved to the museum site in 1983 and restored to reflect a late 19th century immigrant dwelling. The organization name was changed to Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in 1989. The organization was formally recognized on July 2, 1992 as the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in the Congressional Record (Volume 138, Number 98). Groundbreaking for the new facility was celebrated on October 28, 1993. Building was dedicated October 21, 1995 by Presidents Bill Clinton of the United States, Václav Havel of the Czech Republic and Michal Kovác of the Slovak Republic.
