Time Travel: Destination Czech and Slovak Republics

**This lesson is designed to follow the lessons on immigration and timeline of Cedar Rapids History found in the 3rd grade Social Studies curriculum. If completed at another time, a discussion of immigration of immigration and how immigrants contributed to the development of Cedar Rapids would need to be part of the pre-teaching activities
 
 
 
 
 
 

Expectations: Students will:

• Locate the Czech and Slovak Republics on a world map and discuss their location in relation to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

• Explore the changes in European boundaries and gain insight into the formation of the two independent countries.

• Explore the lands, the government and the people of the Czech and Slovak Republics.

• Gain knowledge of the regions of Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia.

• Experience the cultural heritage of the Czechs and Slovaks through music and dance, language activities, folk art, folklore and folk traditions.

• Gain insight into the immigration of Czech and Slovak people to the United States and more specifically to Cedar Rapids.

• Learn about the development of Czech Village and the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Southwest Cedar Rapids.
