Director of Programs


This position reports directly to the Director of Operations

Status: Regular Full-time

Direct Reports: Full-time Family Programs Manager and Interns


The Director of Programs researches, develops, and implements all mission and vision related programming for audiences of all ages and abilities both locally and nationally.


The Director of Programs will:

  • Oversee the inception and implementation of a variety of museum programming, including but not limited to: exhibit openings, concerts, classes, tours, lecture series, community outreach, Summer Family Free Day, and Old World Christmas Market
  • Pursue, establish, and maintain community partnerships for strategic program initiatives
  • Serve on internal and community committees to facilitate outreach opportunities
  • Determine logistics for each event, including working with vendors and performers, community groups, staff and volunteers. Major events may require working with the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa Alcohol & Beverage Division, Cedar Rapids Police Department and Fire Department, Linn County Public Health, and other groups to ensure all rules and regulations are being followed
  • Coordinate and oversee set-up, tear-down, and execution of museum programs
  • Prepare and manage the department budget to meet annual goals
  • Analyze and report on program audience attendance
  • Create and prioritize long and short-term tactics for reaching institutional strategic goals
  • Assist with interdepartmental project coordination
  • Become versed in all front of house operations to serve as a primary visitor contact
  • Perform other job related duties as needed or assigned



  • Previous mission related programming and event planning experience required
  • At least 3 years of museum experience required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Must be available to work extended hours and a variety of shifts to include nights, weekends, and occasional holidays
  • Excellent people skills and the ability to communicate effectively
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to plan and prioritize
  • Flexible and able to multi-task and problem solve in a fast-paced environment
