Mel Spinars Bohemian Women from West River Exhibit Opens Sept. 20
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML) will exhibit Bohemian Women from West River: Mel Spinar Paintings of their Myths and Legends from September 20, 2002 to January 5, 2003. The exhibition consists of 19 original paintings from this South Dakota artist and is mounted in the NCSMLs South Gallery. The exhibition was created by and is on loan to the NCSML from the South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota.
Since 1994, Mel Spinars paintings have incorporated the culture of the national folklore and myths of the Czech Republic and Slovakia handed down to him from his Bohemian mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. He researched these myths and legends in Bohemia, the westernmost region of the Czech Republic. The art on exhibit at the NCSML depicts the Bohemian holidays, religion, landscape, and everyday life as they were remembered in West River, an area in South Dakota. Through his art, Spinar has discovered his familys immigrant past.
Many of the paintings depict weather prediction traditions. In The Cup and Onion Weather Forecast, Spinar conveys the tradition of cutting up an onion on New Years Eve. The onion pieces are placed into twelve cups, salt is added to each, and a label identifies each cup for every month of the year. On New Years Day, the calendar is read. The wetness or dryness of each cup determines how wet or dry each month of the new year will be.
Other works show folklore pertaining to an individuals health. In A Bohemian Death Dream, a man, lying on the bed, is surrounded by shadowy members of his family. According to Spinars family lore, when your entire family appears in one dream, your demise is near.
Spinar was born and raised in Colome, South Dakota. He attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell and graduated with a painting major in 1962. He attended graduate school at the University of Iowa and received his MA and MFA degrees in painting and drawing in 1965. Spinar taught art at the University of Sioux Falls for four years and painting in the Civic Fine Arts Center in Sioux Falls for several years. Since 1969, he has taught in the Visual Arts Department at South Dakota State University, Brookings where he is a professor of painting and drawing.

Intern from Czech Republic Assists NCSML
CEDAR RAPIDS For four weeks, the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML) will have the expert assistance and help of Irena Veselá, a visiting scholar from Muzeum stredního Pootaví in Strakonice, South Bohemia, Czech Republic. There, she is the ethnographer in charge of exhibitions and researchs of national customs, folk architecture, and folk art. She also organizes and plans folk art classes and serves as a tour guide when necessary. She has written articles for regional newspapers and magazines and is a book contributor. Her specialty lies in the folk music of South Bohemia.
Veselá is at the NCSML for one month working primarily in the library summarizing and categorizing various works from the archives. She has worked with several gems found in the library including the Czechoslovak National Council of America documents and letters written by Hana Beneová, the wife of the second president of Czechoslovakia. A recent acquisition from Chicago has piqued her interest because it includes communications and newspaper articles connecting Czech-Americans and dissidents of Czechoslovakia. These documents reveal the Czech-Americans attempt to help the Czechoslovak citizens fight against the communist regime.
"I admire the NCSML. They have so many volunteers and a lot of community support. They are so enthusiastic and proud of my country," commented Veselá. "This has been a nice experience and I am happy to be a part of the NCSML family for a brief period."
Not only is Veselá contributing to NCSML collections and programs, she is also participating in them. She attended the kroje symposium earlier this month and will be leaving with programming ideas to take back to her institution.
"I really enjoyed the Learn at Lunch program about sauerkraut. People are so interested in food and this is a type of program I would like my museum to explore hosting," Veselá explained. "The NCSML does a wonderful job of blending the contemporary Czech and Slovak culture with the traditional Czech and Slovak culture through their exhibitions and programs. Im sorry I will miss the Eva Blahová and Emil Viklický concerts here later this fall."
"It has been wonderful to have Irena here this month," said David Muhlena, NCSML librarian. "So much of our collection is in the Czech and Slovak language. She is really helping the NCSML categorize and identify what is in the collection."
Veselá studied in Charles University in the department of philosophy specializing in ethnology and pedagogy. She has been with the Muzeum stredního Pootaví in Strakonice for four years. This is her first trip to the United States.

NCSML Creates and Distributes Walking Tour of Czech Village
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA Visitors to the southwest side of Cedar Rapids will have the opportunity to learn more about the historic Czech neighborhood with a new walking tour brochure. The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML) researched and created a walking tour of Czech Village. The brochure is available at no cost at the NCSML and offers folks the opportunity to take a self-guided tour of all of Czech Village, the west and the east sides of the river.
"Currently, most Cedar Rapids residents think of the southwest side of town as the Czech village area," commended Jan Stoffer Tursi, the museum educator. "However, when the Czech immigrants first arrived in Cedar Rapids, they settled on the east side of the river before the population expanded to the west side."
The self-guided walking tour starts at the NCSML, travels up the north side of 16th Ave. SW, before going down the south side and across the river to 14th Ave. SE. On the west side, tourists will learn the histories of some of the over 100-year-old buildings located in Czech Village. Once on the east side, visitors will pass by the original location of the immigrant home currently located at the NCSML, the first Czech School building, CSPS Hall, Little Bohemias, and other early Czech neighborhood buildings. Historic photographs from the NCSML archives have been included to give the tourist a sense of what the area looked like around the turn of the century. The tour also offers other points of interest in the Czech neighborhood not included on the route.
The project revealed a lot of new information about the area and has dispelled several myths about the area, including the row of historic houses on 5th Street SE.
"Until recently, local residents believed that Thomas Sinclair built the houses on 5th St. SE for Czech immigrants who worked in his packinghouse. However, we have found evidence that proves that Sinclair neither owned the properties, nor built the houses," explained Stoffer Tursi. "From 1879 to the early 1880s, those lots were owned by the Star Wagon Works, a business located west of the houses. The company slowly sold the properties to the McCall family."
According to the Cedar Rapids City Assessor records, the homes were built between 1880 1885. Brothers Henry, Thomas, James, and William McCall lived at 357 359 5th Street and owned most of the other homes. Thomas, James, and William worked at the Sinclair Packinghouse. In 1900, four of the residents in the nine houses worked for Sinclair.
For more information about T. M. Sinclair and the Sinclair Meatpacking Plant, contact Brucemore at (319) 364-7375 or consult their web site at www.brucemore.org.
The self-guided walking tour brochures are now available at the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library located at 30 16th Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA. For more information about the brochures, NCSML exhibits, and programs, call (319) 362-8500 or consult the web site at WWW.NCSML.ORG.

Academy Award® Nominated Film to Show at the NCSML
"Divided We Fall" (2000) will be shown at the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2002. The film won the 2001 Czech Film and Television Awards for Best Film, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay. In 2000, it was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film and won the Most Popular Film Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival. The film will be shown in the WFLA Heritage Hall at 2:00 pm. No admission will be charged. The film is in Czech with yellow English subtitles and is rated PG-13 for some violence and innuendo.
"Divided We Fall" tells the story of a young couple, Josef and Marie, as they provide shelter to a Jewish neighbor while Czechoslovakia is under German occupation during World War II. The couple lead a simple and restricted life during a time of war and prejudice. When they decide to hide a young Jewish neighbor, their life becomes increasingly complicated. A former colleague of Josef, and Nazi sympathizer, becomes a common visitor to their home and is not shy in demonstrating his attraction to the beautiful Marie. After she rejects his advances, he attempts to seek revenge, forcing the couple to tell a life-changing lie.
"Divided We Fall" was released in the United States but did not play in eastern Iowa. After receiving rave reviews from Ebert and Roeper and the Movies and hearing about the film from NCSML members and supporters, the NCSML is proud to offer it to the local audience.
"Were very excited to bring a film of this quality to Cedar Rapids, " commented Jan Stoffer Tursi, NCSML program coordinator. "Divided We Fall has been on the most requested list for quite some time. Im glad we are finally able to show it to our audience."

Czech Voices to Be Heard at Houby Days
The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library will host Dr. Mila Saskova-Pierce, of the University of Nebraska, Sunday, May 19, 2002. Dr. Saskova-Pierce will present "Czech Voices in Nebraska and Kansas" as part of the NCSMLs Life Long Learning series. The free, public program will begin at 3:00 p.m. and be held in the NCSMLs WFLA Heritage Hall.
At the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries, Nebraska and Kansas offered cheap land, and a place for the establishment of whole ethnic communities including schools, theaters, publication houses, literary societies, and orchestras. Czech immigrants were eager to learn about their new country, its political system, new ways to farm, and how to do business. A number of intellectuals, writers, poets, and composers arose in this fertile new society. To communicate across the great distances of North America, they founded publishing houses and printed periodicals. In periodicals such as Amerikan and Hospodar, there are stories of the old-timers and their experiences that should be preserved as a part of Great Plains history.
Over time, historically Czech communities have lost the Czech language. Because of the language barrier, many old Czech periodicals are no longer seen as useful. Dr. Saskova-Pierce has begun the long process of recovering these precious stories. Her presentation will explore the lives and stories of five people and present their life experiences in the context of their contribution to the Great Plains history.
Saskova-Pierces presentation will conclude the 25th Annual Houby Days celebration in Czech Village. The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library is located at 30 16th Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids. Pretty Dresses Have Pretty Interesting Stories
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA: This summer, the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Librarys special exhibition, Kroje Dress for the Dance of Live!, will reveal some very interesting stories about beautiful folk costumes from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Kroje, pronounced kroy-eh, are powerful symbols of a Czech and Slovaks identity. The exhibition will open to the public April 12, 2002 and runs through October 13, 2002.
Kroje Dress for the Dance of Life! is an original exhibition prepared by the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library. The exhibit will include colorful heirloom textiles and complete kroje, elaborate embroidery, laces, and fine beaded textiles from the Baine/Cincebeaux Collection tell the enchanting tale of national and local pride in ethnic heritage. Also included are several kroje that were previously on display; but, have been resting for several years. One such kroje is the "Fish Scale Kroj."
The Fish Scale Kroj is a complete kroj from near Trebon, Czech Republic. According to the donor, during World War II, the donors husband, John Vittengle, was a member of the Occupational Forces in Czechoslovakia after the war. He served as a member of the Secret Service investigating Russian activity in the country. Because he was fluent in Czech, Vittengle befriended many Czech people and let them know he was from the United States.
Russian officials confiscated valuable items from the Czech people. In order to protect some of their belongings, several such items were passed along to Vittengle with the understanding they would be sent to a Czech community in the United States. Vittengle, in return, sent them to his wife in their home city, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Fish Scale Kroj is said to have been made in 1813 and belonged to the wife of a head fishmaster and supervisor of a large lake near Trebon, Bohemia (now Czech Republic). It is adorned with glass beads, silver sequins, semi-precious stones, lace, and carp scales. The carp scales were cut into various designs before being sewn, with beads, into flower patterns on the blue velvet vest and brown velvet apron. The scales represent the fish and their role in the livelihood of to fishmasters wife while the glass beads represent the fish eggs.
This wonderful complete kroj (consisting of a cap, tie, beaded headband, bodice, beaded blouse, skirt, two aprons, underslip chemise, stockings, handkerchief, scarf, and sandals) was donated to the Czech Museum in 1981. It remained on exhibition for several years before it was temporarily taken off display. The NCSML is proud to once again display this unique and beautiful kroje.
Kroje Dress for the Dance of Life! also includes a series of original oil paintings by Joza Uprka, one of Moravias most recognized artists of the early 20th century. His post-impressionist style uses bright color and texture to create remarkable imagery of village life. And, Kroje! features images adapted from a newly acquired set of World War I-era lantern slides, including hand-colored photos of men and women wearing their kroje.
The NCSML will also be featuring a series of fun programs to compliment Kroje Dress for the Dance of Life! including: lectures, needlework classes, porcelain painting classes, workshops, and a variety of other events. The Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre is presenting The Bartered Bride (Prodaná Nevesta) by Czech composer Bedrich Smetana, June 7 and 9, 2002. The NCSML is hosting a Smetana Forum on June 2, 2002. Dokolacka, dokola: The 1st National Bohemian, Moravian, and Slovak Dance Festival will be July 27, 2002 and a Kroje Symposium will be held September 6 and 7, 2002. Leading folk costume and kroj experts from the Czech Republic and the United States will discuss the trends and history of these unique and beautiful fashions.
Kroje Dress for the Dance of Life! will be on exhibition for a very short time. Dont miss your opportunity to experience the most colorful exhibition in town!
