Muzika! A Celebration of Czech and Slovak Music
Opens April 17, 2004

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library reveals the long tradition and beauty of Czech and Slovak music in the original exhibition, Muzika! A Celebration of Czech and Slovak Music on Saturday, April 17, 2004. Muzika! is a journey through time that explores the history and development of this expressive art form as it examines the musicians, instruments, and the composers that inspired generations. This dynamic exhibition features Gregorian chants of the 9th and 10th centuries, Czech and Slovak instruments from the 16th through 21st centuries, and Czech and Slovak music ranging from classical and folk recordings to rock and jazz. Visitors will see and hear unique instruments used in traditional Czech and Slovak ensembles, discover Iowa’s connection to the most famous Czech composer, learn why the communists banned one Czechoslovak band, and experiment with instruments to discover new sounds.

Muzika! draws upon the diverse sheet and recorded music archives of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library. Highlights also include original 16th through 20th century Czech and Slovak instruments from the National Music Museum at The University of South Dakota, Vermillion; new woodwind, brass and string instruments from Amati-Denak, V.F.Cervený and Strunal companies; and original manuscripts from the Czech Music Museum of the National Museum in Prague.

To celebrate the opening of this wonderful exhibit, the museum will hold a dance on Friday, April 16, 2004 from 7:30 – 11:30 p.m. The St. Louis Czech Express Polka band will fill the air with music as they play at the Riverside Round House. Food and beverages will be available. Tickets are $10.00 in advance from the Museum Store or $12.00 at the door. For information, call (319) 362-8500.

Opening weekend events continue on Sunday, April 18, 2004 with a performance by the 27 member Silesian Choir from Ostrava, Czech Republic.
