$2.9 Million CAT Grant Awarded to NCSML

August 23, 2010

Governor Chet Culver announced a $2.9 million CAT (Community Attraction & Tourism) grant for the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library on Thursday, Aug. 12.  The Vision Iowa Board, chaired by Regenia Bailey, unanimously approved the grant at their meeting in Spencer, Iowa.

Grant funds will be utilized for renovation of the existing museum building that is slated to be moved and elevated three feet above the 2008 flood level. Parking will be provided underneath the structure and a new wing will be added to increase the total size to 50,000 square feet.

“In 2008, the Vision Iowa Board indicated its commitment to helping Cedar Rapids in its flood recovery,” said Bailey. “We are excited to help this culturally significant museum rebuild bigger and better than they were before. We have no doubt that it’s reopening will attract visitors from out-of-state.”

The CAT grant award is contingent upon the completion of fundraising in 120 days and basic LEED certification. The $2.9 million award was the fourth largest grant given during the past 11 years by the Vision Iowa Board.

CAT supports projects that promote recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment attractions that are available to the general public.
