Egg Decorating with Straw (Hanácké Kraslice )

Saturday, January 29, 2011 - Saturday, January 29, 2011
Eggs are symbolically seen the world over as a emblem for new life.  In the Czech & Slovak Republics, egg decorating became a fine art, as artisans developed creative and meticulous approaches for dyeing, painting, and applying a range of designs to the fragile shells.  One method is the exacting art of decorating eggs using wheat straw. This special form of decoration, made most popular by artists of the Haná region of the Czech Republic, requires skill and patience, using eggs dyed a deep color. Master folk artist, Marjorie Nejdl, will demonstrate the art she learned from her grandfather.  While this demonstration isn’t a full class, visitors are welcome to try the technique for themselves
