Flood Recovery

The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library was devastated by the Flood of 2008. Five museum-owned buildings in Czech Village were affected, bringing total flood damage to an estimated $11 million. 75% of our collection was safe from the flood and most of the remaining items are in the process of conservation. It will take several more years to complete the process of conservation, cataloging and inventory the collection.

Rebuilding

Kosek Building Opens April 17
The grand opening of the Kosek Building, a new location for the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML), is scheduled for April 17&18.

The building will house a multimedia exhibition, “Rising Above: The Story of a People and the Flood,” administrative offices, an educational classroom and a newly-merchandised Museum Store.

NCSML to Move, Elevate and Expand Flooded Building
The NCSML is pursuing a plan to move and then elevate its flood-damaged museum building. The museum building will become part of a new and expanded facility. The 15-year-old structure is an architectural icon in Cedar Rapids and the museum’s red roof rising above the 2008 floodwaters depicted the Cedar Rapids disaster around the world. The move is scheduled for late 2010 or early 2011.
