Rebuilding the Future Sets a Record

In March of 2008, the NCSML was riding the crest of 21 years of steady achievement. The museum and library had grown mightily, and the grand, red-roofed building had reached its limit. The constricted space was cramping the work of articulating the ideas and values the organization had grown to represent. The NCSML unveiled plans to expand the museum campus. The excitement was palpable – but it wouldn’t last.

On June 13, 2008 the nation watched in disbelief as Cedar Rapids, Iowa was inundated by the worst flood on record – a flood that exceeded predictions not by inches, but by feet (click here to read our flood story).

In the spring of 2009, the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library embarked on a quest to raise $25 million that would move, restore and add 30,000 sq. ft. to its cherished original museum building; restore flood-damaged historic buildings, and cover disaster expenses.

A campaign of this magnitude would usually take an organization the size of the NCSML six or more years to complete. On December 15, 2010, after a mere 19 months, the NCSML announced that it had exceeded its goal. These dollars included significant funds from both FEMA, and the I-JOBS program set up by Governor Chet Culver and the State of Iowa.

We are forever grateful to the many volunteers who came forth to help with the task of
organizing the Rebuilding the Future campaign.
