Major Gifts Officer
Title: Major Gifts Officer
Department: Development
Reports to: Vice President of Development
Status: Regular Full Time
Major Functions and Purpose:
Responsible for soliciting gifts of $25,000 and greater. Manage relationships with approximately 150 prospective donors and identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward these very important friends of the institution. Work collaboratively with and in support of volunteers, other development staff, and other NCSML representatives to cultivate and solicit donors for institutional priorities. Monitor all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations. Recommend and assist with programming involving the president, vice president for development, and campaign volunteer leaders. Must be a highly energetic professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing significant gifts. Work collaboratively with all staff and volunteer leadership.
Essential Job Functions
• Manage a portfolio of primary prospects (150+)
• Manage primary prospect activities (meetings, events, etc.)
• Travel extensively throughout the year
• Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:
o Initiate contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors
o Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers
o Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure
o Make solicitations when appropriate
• Maintain stewardship contacts with donors; adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathetic disposition, and perseverance; reflect optimistic and positive attitude, and convey sensitivity to needs of the donors
• Work collaboratively with development team. Offer prospect strategy counsel to the president, vice president for development and volunteers who are managing other prospects.
• Be a resource for development staff, from identifying potential volunteer connections to knowing about meeting and event spaces in key locations.
• Focus on securing support for institutional priorities that include programs, unrestricted support, restricted support (such as exhibitions), facility renovations and improvements, and new facilities.
• Provide counsel to the vice president for development on outreach programming.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree, Masters preferred
• Five to seven years successful experience in major or planned gift solicitation
• Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and the institution
• Interest in all aspects of museum and library sciences and a dedication to promoting the NCSML’s fundraising priorities through developing excellent relationships with staff, board members, volunteers, and the development office team
• Success in managing multi-functional or diverse areas
• Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated record of completing assignments
• Must be willing to travel extensively
• Must have a valid Iowa Drivers License

Annual Fund Manager
Department: Development
Reports to: Vice President for Development
Status: Regular Full Time
Major Functions and Purpose
In cooperation with the Vice President for Development, the Annual Fund Manager will design and implement an annual plan to raise operating funds, set funding priorities and oversee the implementation of a targeted strategy for fundraising from individuals, foundations and corporations. Responsible for meeting annual budgetary goals set for these areas of responsibility.
Essential Job Functions
- Annual Operating Appeals – Oversee all direct mail appeals per year. Develop new strategies to identify, target and solicit new donors.
- Membership – manage current member renewal cycle, review benefit package, conduct lapsed member efforts, organize new member campaigns, create member retention programs, conduct local corporate campaign, conduct nation-wide affiliate campaign.
- Sponsorships – organize sponsor opportunities and benefits package as they relate to annual operating support, call on corporations and individuals for support of events and programs, manage volunteers to make calls.
- Exhibit Fund – Arrange ongoing appeals for restricted funds for temporary exhibits.
- Special Events – Work with volunteer committee and board members to conceive, plan and hold large and small fund raising events each year, including but not limited to Fall Dinner, BrewNost!, Prague Spring Evening. Recruit and organize volunteers as necessary, staff all volunteer committees, strategize and coordinate sponsor solicitations (with Vice President for Development), marketing and all details of events, including mailing lists and registration.
- Records, Correspondence and Acknowledgments – Work with the Database Manager to oversee the recording, acknowledgement, correspondence and paperwork associated with gifts, pledges, and memberships.
- Reports – Generate reports as needed on progress and success of fund-raising activities on a regular basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Two years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the skills, knowledge and ability necessary to perform the tasks
- Experience in historical or cultural institution preferred
- Valid Iowa driver's license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Experience with databases; experience with DonorPerfect a plus
- Experience with a variety of software, including all applications in the MicroSoft Office Suite

Compensation

Digital Media Intern
General Description
If you’re a great writer and digital media whiz, come join a fun and dynamic team of museum professionals who are working to preserve the dynamic history and unique culture of the Czech and Slovak people.
Help us build relationships on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook; write and edit online stories, produce, edit and publish digital video and audio; and conduct research about best online practices.
This internship position is an excellent opportunity for students looking to pursue a career in public relations, marketing and communications, as well as those interested in entering the field of cultural, museum or nonprofit organizations. Hours are flexible, 10 - 15 hrs/week. Telecommuting for out-of-town students can be negotiated.
Minimum Qualifications
Communications or Marketing majors with an emphasis on digital media preferred. Must possess communications skills with keen attention to detail and editing; excellent computer skills, including experience using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube for professional purposes; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; a proven track record of prioritizing and completing multiple assignments and a self-starter that is able to work both independently and within a team setting. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, basic digital video editing and video equipment a plus. This position reports directly to the director of marketing and communications.
Candidates must:
• Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
• Have completed freshman year
• Currently be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate school
